Getting to Erimalai: An Overview

Erimalai is located on the northeastern edge of the Jaffna Peninsula in Northern Sri Lanka, approximately 15–20 km from Jaffna city. While there is no direct long-distance transport to Erimalai itself, reaching the area is straightforward once you have arrived in Jaffna — and getting to Jaffna from Colombo and other parts of Sri Lanka has become significantly easier in recent years.

This guide breaks down the journey into two stages: getting to Jaffna, and then getting from Jaffna to Erimalai.

Stage 1: Getting to Jaffna

By Train (Recommended)

The most comfortable and scenic way to reach Jaffna from Colombo is by train. The Yal Devi Express (and other services on the Northern Line) connects Colombo Fort station to Jaffna station, with the journey taking approximately 7–8 hours. Services include both day trains and overnight options.

  • Book seats in advance, especially for 1st and 2nd class air-conditioned carriages, which can fill up quickly.
  • The train passes through Anuradhapura, Vavuniya, and Kilinochchi — offering views of Sri Lanka's changing landscape from lush lowlands to flat, arid north.
  • Tickets can be booked at Colombo Fort station or through Sri Lanka Railways' official online booking system.

By Bus

Long-distance buses from Colombo to Jaffna are operated by both the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) and private operators. The journey takes around 7–9 hours depending on stops and traffic. Buses depart from Colombo's Bastian Mawatha (Pettah) bus terminal. Luxury air-conditioned coach services offer a more comfortable option and can be booked online or through local travel agents.

By Air

FitsAir operates domestic flights between Colombo (Ratmalana Airport) and Jaffna (Palaly Airport). The flight takes approximately 55 minutes and is by far the fastest option, though availability is limited and fares vary. Check the airline's website for current schedules and pricing. Note that Palaly Airport is a civil-military airport with some entry requirements — ensure you have your passport or National ID card.

Stage 2: Getting from Jaffna to Erimalai

Once you are in Jaffna city, reaching Erimalai requires local transport. The distance is roughly 15–20 km, and the roads are generally in good condition.

By Tuk-Tuk (Auto Rickshaw)

Hiring a tuk-tuk is the most flexible and commonly used option for day trips from Jaffna to Erimalai. You can negotiate a full-day hire with a driver, which allows you to explore Erimalai and potentially other nearby coastal villages at your own pace. Agree on the fare and itinerary before departing — Jaffna tuk-tuk drivers are generally accustomed to taking tourists to the peninsula's sights.

By Bicycle

Several guesthouses and bicycle rental shops in Jaffna offer bicycle hire by the day. The route to Erimalai is flat and manageable for a moderately fit cyclist, and the journey through northern villages and past palmyra palm groves is beautiful. Allow around 1–1.5 hours each way at a relaxed pace.

By Motorbike

Motorbike hire is available in Jaffna and gives you maximum flexibility. Ensure you have a valid licence appropriate for the vehicle class, and always wear a helmet. The roads between Jaffna and Erimalai are generally quiet, but exercise caution at rural intersections.

By Local Bus

Local buses operate from Jaffna's central bus stand to various destinations on the peninsula. Ask locally for the route and bus number serving the Erimalai direction — routes and schedules can change, and local advice at the bus stand will be most current. This is the most budget-friendly option but requires flexibility with timing.

Tips for a Smooth Journey

  • Carry your passport or National ID card when travelling in the north — checkpoints may require identification.
  • Download an offline map of the Jaffna Peninsula before you travel, as mobile data coverage can be patchy in rural areas.
  • If travelling by train or bus, book your return journey as soon as you arrive in Jaffna, particularly during holiday periods.
  • Exchange cash before heading out to Erimalai — ATMs are available in Jaffna city but not in the village itself.
